Happy 4th of July Everyone! I am so excited for tomorrow I can’t STAND it! Fireworks, barbecues, and bikinis – what’s not to love?! This year, we have quite a few guests in town to celebrate with us, so I decided to make some festive 4th of July Oreo Balls to serve tomorrow.
Oreo balls are one of those desserts that we make year round because they are so spectacularly addicting and they keep for a long time in the freezer, so you can enjoy them for weeks. They are also super easy to modify for any holiday with festive sprinkles / food coloring / garnishes, which is why I wanted to make a patriotic version for the 4th
Oreo Balls Taste Better Than They Look
SO… these are probably not the most gorgeous Oreo Balls you’ve ever seen. I am not afraid to admit my culinary strengths lie more with the savory than with the sweet LOL.
Originally, I was trying to go for the *galaxy* type look I’ve seen on Buzzfeed Tasty, with red, white, and blue marble coloring on the outside. NEEDLESS TO SAY, they did not quite turn out that way 😂. So – PLOT TWIST – I have instead prepared for you a red, white and blue speckled (?) Oreo Ball.
The bottom line is that, although the aesthetics are not exactly award-winning, these are so ridiculously rich and delicious that their looks just don’t really matter.
Easy Mixing and Scooping
The two kitchen tools that are going to make your life 10x easier with this recipe are a food processor and a cookie scoop.
The food processor will save you a ton of time crushing Oreos and will ensure that the cream cheese is evenly mixed in.
The cookie scoop will save a ton of time by allowing you to scoop identical Oreo balls quickly. I used to roll the Oreo balls out with my hands after measuring with a table spoon and it took FOREVER. This scoop literally costs $13 on Amazon – it’s worth the investment!
Don’t rush the freezing process
After you finish scooping the Oreo balls, they will need time to freeze. This is when you melt the chocolate
(FOR TIPS ON HOW TO EASILY MELT CHOCOLATE, CHECK OUT MY OTHER BLOG POST HERE)
If you are planning to pipe the white baking chocolate on the Oreo balls, you probably only need about 20 minutes in the freezer.
If you are going to try and dip the Oreo Balls in melted chocolate, I would give it closer to 1-1.5 hours. Otherwise, the Oreo Ball will melt and you will get chunks of Oreo speckled through your white chocolate. (This is how I used to do it, but I eventually gave up and resorted to piping – much easier. LOL)
I hope you all have a happy and safe fourth of July! As always, be sure to let me know if you give these a try!
Oreo Balls
Equipment
- food processor
- Baking Sheet
- Plastic Sandwich Bags
Ingredients
- 1 box Double Stuf Oreos (family size box 1 lb 4 oz)
- 8 oz cream cheese softened
- 11 oz white baking chips (I always buy extra in case!)
- red and blue food coloring (OPTIONAL 4TH OF JULY)
Instructions
Make Oreo Dough
- In a food processor, combine oreo balls and cream cheese. Blend together until smooth.
Scoop Oreo Dough
- Using a cookie scoop (or a tablespoon measurer), scoop the dough into uniform balls.
- Lay out the balls on a lined baking sheet and put into the freezer for 20-30 minutes.
Melt Chocolate
- Using a double boiler, melt the white chocolate with a little bit of vegetable oil. (the vegetable oil keeps the chocolate from seizing and makes coating a little easier).
- OPTIONAL: For 4th of July speckled Oreo Balls, add in the food coloring and stir slowly until speckled with red and blue.
- Spoon the chocolate into a plastic sandwich bag.
Coat Oreo Balls with Chocolate
- Remove the tray of Oreo Balls from the freezer.
- Snip the tip of the sandwich bag and pipe the chocolate onto each Oreo Ball.
- Return to the freezer for another 20-30 minutes.
